Guy Ritchie On Will Smith Potentially Playing The Genie In ‘Aladdin’ Remake

Guy Ritchie, who will direct the upcoming live-action remake of Disney's'Aladdin' addresses the rumors of Will Smith potentially playing the Genie.

GenieGuy Ritchie is getting ready for a magic carpet adventure when he directs the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin. The 1992 animated classic is being brought back to life on the big screen, and alongside finding the right performers to play Aladdin and Jasmine, casting the Genie is also incredibly crucial to this upcoming production.

Recently, it was reported that Will Smith is in early talks to potentially play the Genie. Following in the footsteps of an icon like Robin Williams is no easy task, but Smith’s charm and charisma can bring a different dynamic to the Genie that can both be a tribute to what Williams brought to the role as well as its own unique personality.

E! News recently asked Ritchie about the rumors in casting Smith for the Genie. The director did not confirm the reports, but he did give an interesting response:

I can’t give you any updates. I mean, I like Will Smith very much,” he said with a smile. “It would make me very happy to be making it with him, but the whole thing is very exciting. I’m looking forward to it.

If Smith were to be cast, he would be accompanying the two Middle Eastern newcomers. Can you imagine having your big break not only as Aladdin or Jasmine, but to also star alongside Will Smith in a major film? Talk about wishes coming true.

Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie’s newest film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword will open in theaters on May 12, 2017.
