‘Game Of Thrones’: HBO CEO Discusses Spin-Off Plans

HBO CEO Richard Plepler has confirmed that the network is looking into a Game of Thrones spin-off, but that's still in the very early stages.

Game of Thrones will return for its highly anticipated seventh season next summer, but after that there’s just one more left before the series ends. The fans are well aware of this, and so is HBO, so it’s not surprising that we’ve been hearing so much about a potential spin-off series over the past few months.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, HBO CEO Richard Plepler once again confirmed that the network is looking into another series set in the same world as Game of Thrones. However, Plepler also cautioned that everything is still in the very early stages, meaning that there’s nothing solid just yet.

“It certainly has not escaped [HBO president of programming] Casey [Bloys] and myself that there might be some brand extension [for GOT] that would be exciting. It certainly has not escaped the producers. Right now we’re focused on finishing the series with the kind of energy and excitement that everyone has come to expect. We’re going to do that while at the same time parallel processing very embryonic stages of other possibilities.”

There’s certainly no shortage of material to choose from for another series. Most fans believe that Robert’s Rebellion is the perfect subject for a spin-off, but there are also many other great candidates thanks to the rich backstory that author George R.R. Martin created for his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
