The Last of Us co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin has confirmed that the HBO series will cotninue beyond its second season. During the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas, Mazin revealed that there’s still a lot of story to tell thanks to the length of The Last of Us Part II.

“We should be around for a while,” Mazin stated, dismissing any concerns that the series would wrap up after its second season. The second season has yet to premiere, and with the project still at “the script stage,” it’s unclear when it will air.

Craig Mazin’s comments provide a welcome reassurance for fans of The Last of Us. While little is known about the upcoming second season, it has been confirmed that it will follow the events of The Last of Us Part II, with actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in the lead roles as Joel Miller and Ellie Williams, respectively.

The Last of Us is just one of many video games that have been adapted into television series and movies in recent years. While adaptations of video games have been hit-or-miss in the past, the success of The Last of Us on HBO, as well as the box office earnings of the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movies, suggests that audiences are becoming more receptive to the genre.

What you need to know about The Last of Us

Developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, The Last of Us centers on the relationship between a smuggler named Joel Miler and 14-year-old Ellie Williams, the latter of whom may be the key to curing the deadly pandemic that resulted in the post-apocalypse world of the game. Hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, Joel finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she relies on him as they fight to survive on their journey across the United States.

The Last of Us has been officially renewed for a second season by HBO, with production expected to kick off later this year. Its season one cast also includes Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Storm Reid, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, Elaine Miles, Melanie Lynskey, Rutina Wesley, Brad Leland, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson.
