Shazam! director David F. Sandberg recently opened up about the original plans for Henry Cavill’s Superman cameo in the movie.
Although Superman has a cameo at the end of Zachary Levi’s Shazam! movie, Kal- El is only shown from the torso down as Henry Cavill himself was unable to film the scene. During a Q&A on his Instagram stories, Sandberg revealed the original plans for how Henry Cavill would’ve factored into the cameo as Superman. Here’s what the filmmaker told fans about the scrapped Henry Cavill cameo:
“He sat down at the table. They had a brief chat. There was a joke about [sort of] school food and then it ended with Freddy just leaning into him, and it going like, ‘I have so many questions,’ and then it cut out.”
Right before the Shazam! cut to credits, Zachary Levi’s hero surprises Freddy Freeman (played by It: Chapter Two star Jack Dylan Grazer) at the cafeteria with a special friend of his accompanying him for their meal. We see that Superman has joined Shazam and Freddy for lunch, much to Freddy’s shock and awe. With Henry Cavill not involved, the Superman suit was worn by Levi’s stunt double.
It sure would’ve been exciting to see Henry Cavill as Superman appear in the cafeteria alongside Shazam and Freddy, especially given that Freddy is particularly obsessed with Superman. Henry Cavill was last seen as the Man of Steel in one of the post-credits scenes of Justice League, where he was shown to start a race with The Flash (Ezra Miller) to see who was the fastest of the two.
Henry Cavill’s future as Superman is currently in question, especially after it was reported that the actor’s involvement with the DC Extended Universe was in jeopardy given that DC Films is currently undergoing numerous changes after the underperformance of Justice League.

Here’s the official synopsis for the Shazam! movie:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou.
Shazam! is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
