In their cover story on X-Men: Dark Phoenix last year, Entertainment Weekly stated that a “massive twist halfway through the film will irrevocably change the course of the franchise.” Along with that tidbit came an image of several main characters standing around a graveyard, and it was pretty clear that there would be a big death for the franchise. Read on below if you wanna find out who it is.
We Got This Covered has the scoop on the big death in Dark Phoenix, and to the surprise of few, it’s Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven Darkholme/Mystique that will bite the big one. It’s said that once Jean Grey’s powers begin manifesting, she tries to sort things out on her own, but her friends won’t let her, asking instead that she come back to Xavier’s school so they can help her. Unfortunately, the others push Jean a bit too far and she lashes out at them in anger, and in using too much force she ends up accidentally killing Mystique.
I can’t say I’m surprised if this turns out to be the case. Many have been critical of Lawrence’s portrayal of Mystique in recent films and how Lawrence’s status has made Raven more of a lead character than the more deserving ones. Maybe killing her off midway through could make for a somewhat better film, but only time will tell.
