When Hugh Jackman was first cast to play Logan/Wolverine, he admitted recently to the Associated Press that he didn’t know exactly what a wolverine was.
“I didn’t even know there was a wolverine. I literally, embarrassingly did about two weeks of research on wolves. I was rehearsing for three weeks and I was shooting, so I was kind of on my own. I remember going past an IMAX in Toronto, and there was an IMAX documentary about wolves, and so I thought, ‘I’ll go and see that’.”
X-Men director Bryan Singer caught on and asked Jackman about what he was doing with his performance.
“He said, ‘Are you sort of walking funny, what’s going on?’ And I said, ‘I’ve been doing this thing with wolves,’ and he goes, ‘You know you’re not a wolf, right?’ I said, ‘Well, there’s no such thing as a wolverine.’”
Singer then responded to the actor by telling him to “Go to the zoo, dude.”
I think it’s safe to say that regardless of Jackman’s confusion at first, he played Wolverine pretty well for many years after the first film. Recently, Jackman’s final film playing the character, Logan, will be released on DVD/Blu-Ray on May 23, 2017.
