The Hulk is [normally] always ready to throw down and fight, even if a situation doesn’t call for it. Though in those instances, it’s probably because someone got on Bruce Banner’s bad side. Now the Russo Brothers in the past have already given their explanation as to why the Hulk wouldn’t come out to play after being thoroughly trounced by Thanos early on in Avengers: Infinity War, but one fan over on Reddit has taken it upon themselves to offer an explanation.
But more than that, they tackle the two reasons given why Banner couldn’t summon Hulk again throughout Infinity War. Those two explanations include Hulk being tired of being used as a weapon after being used for pure show and spectacle in Thor: Ragnarok, and the other being Hulk was afraid of Thanos. On their own and individually, the poster says, neither of these theories holds up. So what gives? The theory postulates that after Hulk helped Thor during Ragnarok, he was still no match for either Hela or Surtur.
More than that, of the main Avengers, Thor is the one who treated Hulk more like an equal, no doubt because Thor had more time to spend with Hulk — that we’ve seen — during Ragnarok and leading into Avengers: Infinity War. After falling to Thanos, though, the Hulk became withdrawn and hid away. With those losses under his belt and the people of Asgard being effectively wiped out by Thanos, what option is there for the Hulk other than to hide? While Banner was ultimately one of the survivors of the Thanos snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it remains to be seen if the two will throw down again in Avengers 4, or if Banner can even manage to summon the Hulk again.
