‘Agents of SHIELD’ Star Iain De Caestecker Reveals Whether He Would Return To The MCU

Could Fitz return to the MCU?

Agents of SHIELD Fitz Iain De Caestecker MCU Marvel

Iain De Caestecker, who played the SHIELD agent Fitz in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, has shared his thoughts on returning to the role in the MCU.

While the canonicity of Agents of SHIELD was brought into question as the series continued and its storylines became increasingly ambitious, now that the stars of Marvel’s Netflix series are joining the main MCU, the door could well be open for the Agents of SHIELD cast as well.

However, talking about a potential return, the Fitz actor has revealed he’s not likely to show up in another Marvel property.

Fitz & Simmons’ Happy Ending

Iain De Caestecker has cited Agents of SHIELD‘s perfect ending for Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge’s Jemma Simmons as his reason for not wanting to return to the character.

The conclusion to Agents of SHIELD saw Fitz and Simmons retiring from SHIELD to raise their daughter, an ending that Iain De Caestecker apparently does not want to mess with. Talking to Digital Spy in a recent interview, the actor responded to the question of a possible MCU return:

“I think I would say probably no. And not that I didn’t have a fantastic time doing it. I think, after everything that happened to those two characters [Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons], they really gave them a happy ending. And I think it would be so sad to mess with that again. It’s not fair.

“I’m not sure they would survive it this time. So I like the idea that they’re living a life of normality outside of the S.H.I.E.L.D.”

The Agents of SHIELD actor was also asked about the contentious matter of whether the series is MCU canon. Reflecting on the series’ origins, De Caestecker said:

“I would say you might have to, because I think the original conception of the show was the fact that Coulson had come from the Avengers, isn’t it? I think you would kind of have to say it is canon.”

Of course, with the recent introduction of the Multiverse to the MCU, it would always be possible to explain away discrepancies between Agents of SHIELD and Marvel’s movies by placing the TV series in its own universe as a close offshoot of the main MCU.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD starred Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, and Jeff Ward. The series was co-created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who also serve as executive producers along with Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb. The series was produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television for ABC.
