Idris Elba is the latest actor to jump from the MCU to DC, joining James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but he revealed if he would still reprise his role as Heimdall in the future.
Idris Elba was not the star he was when the first Thor film came out and only played a small role as Heimdall. His role in the sequels increased due to his status, however, Idris Elba’s Heimdall died at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. Idris Elba will now star in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, where he’s rumored to play Bronze Tiger. Despite Heimdall’s Infinity War death, the character could still return, especially when Loki is getting his own Disney+ series.
While it has been largely believed by fans that actors can’t jump from DC to Marvel films due to contracts, that doesn’t seem to be the case. We are now seeing more actors jumping back and forth, such as The Suicide Squad and Ant-Man’s David Dastmalchian. The Suicide Squad and Thor franchise star Idris Elba was asked on ABC radio if he would like to return as Heimdall in the MCU, in which he responded:
“Of course. Listen, Heimdall is essentially part of the god family. So you know, he essentially could be alive. I’m just saying! I’m just putting it out there. The Heimdall character goes way back into, you know, the Thor mythology, And I’m sure there will be an interesting way to bring that alive. Of course I would. Yes.”

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the supervillain team in his upcoming movie, with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman playing Rick Flag again, David Dastmalchian starring as Polka-Dot Man, and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller. John Cena reportedly in talks for an undisclosed role.
The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. These projects include The Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Birds of Prey, Black Adam, Nightwing, Supergirl and New Gods.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
