Marvel Studios’ latest Disney Plus series, Ms. Marvel, has attracted its fair share of predictable review bombers, but star Iman Vellani isn’t bothered in the slightest.
Ms. Marvel quickly proved itself a huge hit with critics and fans alike. However, as the first Marvel series to feature a Pakistani Muslim heroine, it has unfortunately attracted the ire of a few regressive trolls online.
Despite the predictable but disappointing hate, Ms. Marvel actress Iman Vellani is staying in high spirits and hoping the show will ultimately get through to some of those review bombers.
‘A Love Letter To Marvel Fans’
Iman Vellani, who appears as Kamala Khan, the titular hero of Ms. Marvel, recently discussed reactions to the series with NME.
The Ms. Marvel actress clarified that she doesn’t see any of the reactions directly, as she is not on social media. However, Vellani revealed that when she does hear about the review bombers and trolls, she finds their responses “laughable.” She said:
“I’m not on social media. I hear things that my mother tells me though. It’s honestly quite laughable and I think change is scary for a lot of people. And having a show that surrounds a 16-year-old girl who’s Pakistani and Muslim and a superhero is scary for a lot of people. I think this is just gonna rip the Band Aid off and hopefully people will fall in love with her.”
Asked if she thought Ms. Marvel would even get through to those commenters who seem set on hating the series, Iman Vellani confirmed:
“This show is for Marvel fans. If you’re a real Marvel fan, if any of those review bombers consider themselves a Marvel fan, then this show’s for them too. We wanted Ms. Marvel to be a love letter to Marvel fans. So yeah, I don’t care about them!”
The final episode of Ms. Marvel will be released next week on Disney Plus, concluding the young hero’s origin story. After that, she will be going on to appear on the big screen alongside Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau in The Marvels.
Here is the synopsis for Ms. Marvel:
Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. Life gets better with super powers, right?
