Avengers: Infinity War has been out for almost two weeks and the tragic events of the film’s final scenes still weigh heavy on the minds of fans. Director Joe Russo shed some light on the significance of which members of Earth’s Mightiest heroes are still standing.
Half of the directing team for Infinity War was doing a Q&A at a school in Iowa and the topic of who Thanos spared after his climactic snap came up. The director talked about the planning and strategy of the film’s tragic ending, as well as the importance of who would come out on the other side.
“It was great, something we knew we were going to do from the very beginning- one of the first things we knew we were going to end with. And we wanted the ramifications of the snap- to feel it as you watch it. So it wasn’t a plot cliffhanger to end the film, it was an emotional cliffhanger to go beyond the snap and like a horror film make you watch every character you love disappear. That’s the catharsis and had we not done that we wouldn’t have the emotional reaction that we did… your imagination might not be as horrific as watching them go and watching the other characters watch them. Did anyone specifically notice who was left at the end?”
After several students responded, Russo confirmed:
“Yes the original avengers…interesting…the original avengers.”
Most fans speculated that the original Avengers would meet their end by Thanos and the newer characters would join forces to avenge their fallen predecessors. It looks like Infinity War’s follow-up will be the exact opposite, as the original Avengers will suit up for one last hoorah to undo the evil that Thanos has done. It will be interesting to see how the survivors of the Thanos snap band together with new allies to overcome impossible odds to restore order to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers 4 is currently in production and will drop in theaters next year.
