The writers of the upcoming HBO Max It prequel, Welcome to Derry celebrate the first day in the writer’s room with red balloons.
Back in 2017, Warner Bros and director Andy Muschietti blew away audiences and critics with the first part of their adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, IT. The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing R-Rated films ever, earning over $700M worldwide. The sequel, IT: Chapter Two, ultimately didn’t click as well with audiences and critics but still earned over $473M worldwide on a $79M budget. With the success of these two films, Warner Bros decided that it wasn’t ready.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that a prequel series for IT was in development. The series titled Welcome to Derry is set to take place in the 1960s, explores the origins of Pennywise, and details the events that eventually lead up to the first film. Up until now, however, no one had discussed the project.
And So, The Nightmare Begins Again…
In a recent post Welcome to Derry writer Shelley Meals revealed that today was the first day for the team in the writer’s room. The office was appropriately decorated with red balloons:
It director Andy Muschietti will serve as executive producer for the series alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. It is currently unknown if Bill Skarsgard will return as Pennywise or if any of the original cast members will be involved in the series. Here is the official synopsis for It: Chapter Two:
Twenty-seven years after the events of the summer of 1989, It (Bill Skarsgard) returns. The Losers’ Club fulfill their promises and return to Derry to put an end to the evil being once and for all. Unbeknownst to them, It has returned, stronger and crueler than ever.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Gary Dauberman, It: Chapter Two stars Jessica Chastain as Beverly, James McAvoy as Bill, Bill Hader as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike, Jay Ryan as Ben, James Ransone as Eddie, and Andy Bean as Stanley.
