The massive budget for James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequels has reportedly been revealed as production is expected to resume soon in New Zealand.
The sequels to James Cameron’s incredibly successful Avatar film have been in the works for almost a decade with filming beginning back in 2017. Principal photography for Avatar 2 and 3 wrapped back in 2019 with two more films left to film, but production was recently shutdown in New Zealand due to the coronavirus.
However, work on the Avatar sequels and Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series are expected to continue soon as New Zealand was recently declared safe by the national government. According to Deadline, James Cameron’s sequels have a combined budget of more than $1 billion, with around $250 million for each sequel. For some perspective, the first film had a budget of $237 million.

Here is the official synopsis for the first film:
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
Directed by James Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.
Avatar 2 is currently slated for December 17, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood and subscribe to our YouTube channel for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming Avatar sequels!
