James D’Arcy, who played Edwin Jarvis in Marvel’s Captain America spin-off series, Agent Carter, has hinted at a possible return to the MCU.
Edwin Jarvis, whom James D’Arcy played in both Agent Carter and in a brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame, was Howard Stark’s butler and the inspiration for Tony Stark’s AI system, JARVIS. The character assisted Peggy Carter throughout her post-WWII missions, when she worked for the SSR prior to the founding of SHIELD. His surprise appearance in Avengers: Endgame happened during Tony Stark’s and Steve Rogers’ journey through time to the 1970s, where Tony runs into his father, Howard. As the two part ways, Howard exchanges a few words with Jarvis, who is driving him home.
James D’Arcy recently talked to Digital Spy about his role in Avengers: Endgame and the possibility of a return to the MCU. As well as expressing his love for the character and discussing the experience of playing Jarvis in Agent Carter, he talked about his excitement to be invited to take part in the last Avengers movie. Talking about his Endgame cameo, D’Arcy said “I loved the experience, and I was really lucky – the Russo brothers have been very, very good to me, and they very sweetly invited me back to be in Endgame briefly, which was great.”
He went on to tease a potential return for Jarvis, pointing out “the Marvel universe is a funny old place. Nobody is ever dead. And now they’re into the metaverse.” D’Arcy probably meant to refer to the multiverse – the infinite collection of parallel universes that Marvel started exploring with projects like Loki on Disney Plus and Spider-Man: No Way Home. With Jarvis living before the Avengers ever formed, perhaps the multiverse could offer an opportunity to re-examine another version of the character.
D’Arcy’s most recent appearance as Jarvis was in Avengers: Endgame. Here’s the official synopsis:
