James Gunn has revealed the original Avengers: Infinity War plan for the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Avengers: Infinity War served as the first bridge to bring most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. Most notably, the nation of Wakanda was opened up to the titular team and the Guardians of the Galaxy brushed shoulders with the likes of Thor and Iron Man. The cosmic team’s inclusion in the Avengers film was central to its premise, which was reflected by their more-than-substantial screen time. While it’s hard to imagine Avengers: Infinity War without the Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn revealed that the cosmic team was originally just had a cameo in what has been dubbed as the most ambitious cinematic crossover in cinematic history.
During the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 watch party by ComicBook.com, James Gunn was asked if he knew how integral the team would be to Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. To the surprise of many, the director revealed that the team was originally only going to cameo in the movie, something that changed as he worked on the Vol. 2 script. You can check out what he had to say on the matter below.

Avengers: Infinity War is beholden to the numerous actions done by the Guardians of the Galaxy, such as Thanos sacrificing Gamora. Another major component of the film is Peter Quill’s incessant anger towards the Mad Titan, which caused Josh Brolin’s villain to escape from the Avengers’ hands, leading to his infamous snap. Without the cosmic team, we also wouldn’t have been able to have seen Thor’s lovely friendship with Rocket Raccoon, which emerged as a fan-favorite. As fans, we’re sure glad that James Gunn wrote a killer script allowed the team to be more prominent in the Avengers films.
