Posting on Instagram to share a Suicide Squad comic-book that his agent gave him to commemorate the beginning of filming for The Suicide Squad, James Gunn revealed in the comments what specific comic-book elements inspired his film when asked by a fan.

Before revealing what inspired him film, James Gunn gave the comments a history lesson by discussing how the concept and team of the Suicide Squad has changed over time. James Gunn began by bringing to light how the team originally began as a group of scientists, adventurers, and soldiers who went and investigated events that were quite treacherous. Later, comic-book writer John Ostrander introduced the concept of ‘the dirty dozen’, and how the team consisted of dispensable, second-rate villains. He also brought to light how fan favourite King Shark joined the team quite recently in the 2000’s.

When it came to the comic elements that inspired The Suicide Squad, James Gunn stated that his film is an amalgamation of all these timelines and concepts that run through the mythos of the Suicide Squad. James Gunn also stated that his film is especially indebted to the works of James Ostrander and Kim Yale, both of which who contributed to the Suicide Squad‘s resurgence in the 80’s.
