Ahead of next week’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, DC has unveiled a special Comic-Con exclusive preview of Creature Commandos, the upcoming animated series from James Gunn.
The Creature Commandos variant that features the cover will also include Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1 and the team’s first appearance in Weird War Tales #93. This cover is part of a series that includes fresh artwork tied to other DC Universe projects, such as the new Superman movie starring David Corenswet.
Created by DC Studios co-head James Gunn, Creature Commandos is an animated series that follows a specialized team composed of both supernatural beings and human characters. The team, led by Rick Flag’s father, includes figures like Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosphorus, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel.
What to expect from Creature Commandos, according to James Gunn
“[Creature Commandos] picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale, which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions,” Gunn said of the series at the Annecy Animation Festival. “Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”
During his appearance at Annecy, Gunn also said that the show’s leads “are actual literal monsters, and I can’t wait for you to meet them. Creating this series has been one of the absolute joys of my life.”
DC Studios’ exact plans for Comic-Con remain unconfirmed, but there is speculation that James Gunn and Peter Safran may feature in a larger Warner Bros. panel. The potential showcase could include updates on Creature Commandos as well as other highly anticipated projects across the DC Universe. For now, San Diego Comic-Con will feature panels for other notable DC projects, including HBO’s The Penguin and a special screening and discussion for Batman: Caped Crusader.
Creature Commandos is scheduled to premiere on Max in December. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.
