During San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, DC fans were treated to the first official trailer for James Gunn’s animated series Creature Commandos. The release came as a surprise, as Gunn and his DC Studios partner Peter Safran were not present to showcase their DC Studios slate in person.
Despite the absence of DC Studios, the debut of the Creature Commandos trailer captivated attendees of the Jim Lee & Friends panel, hosted by the Chief Creative Officer of DC. You can get your first look at the seven-episode animated series below.
Created by DC Studios co-head James Gunn, Creature Commandos is an animated series that follows a specialized team composed of both supernatural beings and human characters. The team, led by Rick Flag’s father, includes figures like Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosphorus, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, G.I. Robot, and Weasel.
What to expect from Creature Commandos, according to James Gunn
“[Creature Commandos] picks up directly after our Peacemaker season one finale, which leaves Waller with her hands tied operationally, meaning that she’s no longer able to get away with putting human lives on the line to carry out her clandestine morally questionable missions,” Gunn said of the series at the Annecy Animation Festival. “Instead, she recruits a ragtag band of misfits, not unlike the Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.”
The cast of Creature Commandos features Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, and Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel. Steve Agee and Viola Davis reprise their roles as John Economos and Amanda Waller, respectively.
Creature Commandos is scheduled to premiere on Max in December. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe.
