DC Studios co-head James Gunn teased the possibility of a crossover event between DC and Marvel in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. As the director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn has experience working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is now in a position of power at DC, making him a key figure in the potential live-action crossover event.

While he did not give any concrete details about the possibility of a DC and Marvel crossover movie, James Gunn did suggest that the chances of it happening are now more likely with him in charge at DC Studios. “Who knows?” I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC], the director told Empire. However, he also noted that any crossover movie would be many years away, as DC needs to establish its own universe first.

Can a DC and Marvel crossover movie realistically happen?

The idea of a DC and Marvel crossover movie is something that superhero fans have dreamed about for years. Both comic book universes have a vast array of beloved characters and seeing them team up on the big screen would be a dream come true for many fans. However, the logistics of such a crossover movie would be complicated.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to a potential DC and Marvel crossover project. Both studios have their own cinematic universes to worry about and it’s unclear how a crossover would affect them. Additionally, there are legal and financial issues to consider, as the rights to different characters are owned by different companies.

Despite the challenges, there have been hints of a potential DC and Marvel crossover movie in the past. In 1996, DC and Marvel teamed up for a comic book crossover event called DC vs. Marvel. The series saw characters from both universes pitted against each other in epic battles, with fans voting for the winners.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
