James Gunn’s Initial Treatment For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’ Included Another Guardian

During Comic-Con, director James Gunn gave fans a first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 by releasing an awesome piece of concept art from the movie. The artwork (seen above) revealed that Yondu (played by Michael Rooker), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) will be joining Star-Lord and the rest of the Guardians on their next adventure, but apparently there was one character who was also supposed to join the team but didn’t make the final cut.

Gunn recently held a brief Q&A session on his Facebook page and answered all sorts of question regarding the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the most interesting reveals from the Q&A was that the initial treatment for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 included one more Guardian, though Gunn wouldn’t reveal the identity of the character:

“In my initial treatment I had a whole other Guardian involved. I loved the character and loved including him/her, and thought my take was fun. But I started to feel that there were two many characters in the story and for all of the characters to get their due, I needed to remove one. So this character left, and Mantis stayed.”

The director also mentioned that he doesn’t think that we’re going to see the Defenders in Avengers: Infinity War, which will begin filming in a few months:

“I don’t think we’re going to see much interactions between the Marvel TV universe and the MCU in the near future.”

Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Glenn Close, Elizabeth Debicki and Kurt Russell, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5th, 2017.
