‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’: James Gunn On Groot’s Evolution

Groot's going to have some changes.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has teased Groot’s physical evolution.

The last time we saw Groot, he was an annoying teenager in Avengers: Infinity War. He briefly returned in Avengers: Endgame after being brought back after the snap. Now, the tree will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Vol. 3, which will release in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Seeing as it’s been some time since we saw Groot, fans have been wondering what he’ll look like in James Gunn’s upcoming projects. Will he still be a teenager who loves to game? Or will he grow into his old, mature self that he was first seen presented as?

When asked by a fan on Twitter, James Gunn made it clear that “years have passed” since we last saw him, meaning he’s sure to have grown in the time between. Now, does that mean physically? Or mentally? Or both?

A fan continued by asking the Guardians of the Galaxy director when the third film takes place. James Gunn responded with a simple “Now.”

Avengers: Endgame was set in 2023, which just so happens to be the same year Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 drops, so it’s unclear if by “now”, Gunn means 2023 or the years that have passed since those events. Obviously, Groot will grow, likely both emotionally and physically, as teased by Gunn, so it’s likely the film takes place in the mid-2020s, giving the character enough time to change and evolve. The last time we saw Groot he was an angsty teenager, though still helpful in battle. Perhaps the events of Endgame forced him to grow as a tree?

The Guardians of the Galaxy were last seen in Avengers: Endgame. Here’s the synopsis for the film:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films,”Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Josh Brolin, and Chris Pratt.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock in the upcoming sequel! You can also subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
