As James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy comes to a close, he’s had some time to reflect on his journey with Marvel Studios. After nearly 12 years working on these films, in an adventure that has had some peaks and valleys along the way, the writer director revealed what he’s going to miss the most about working in the franchise.

During the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 global virtual press junket held on Friday April 28, James Gunn was asked by moderator and cast member Nathan Fillion about how he feels parting ways now that his long-awaited trilogy-capper is about to hit theaters. As it turns out, Gunn holds a special place in his heart for the characters he introduced to audiences in 2014. “I’m gonna miss these characters. That’s the saddest part for me, is that I really, truly love these characters. I love all of them. I think there are certain ones that I have a special fondness for, especially Rocket. And yeah, the saddest part of all of this. I’m gonna see all these people again. They’re all friends of mine. But I’m not gonna see the character. I’m not gonna be writing the characters again, at least not in the near future. And so, that’s a real sadness, yeah.”

For Marvel Studios, James Gunn has directed three Guardians of the Galaxy films, as well as a Holiday Special made exclusively for Disney Plus. In July 2018, he was infamously fired from directing Vol. 3, and eventually agreed to direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films, which also led to the HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker. He was eventually reinstated into the director’s chair to complete his originally-planned trilogy.

James Gunn has emphasized that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is his swan song from the MCU now, given that he has accepted the coveted job as the new co-CEO of DC Studios alongside film producer Peter Safran. One of his first duties in his new position is to write and direct Superman: Legacy, which is a reboot exploring a younger Clark Kent, moving on from the most recent iteration with Henry Cavill.

What to expect from the third Guardians movie

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji and Maria Bakalova.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 synopsis reads as follows: “Our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere, but it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life – a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
