It was a huge shock to many when James Gunn was originally fired off Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After the original decision was made by Disney, James Gunn moved over to DC, where he is now currently filming The Suicide Squad in Atlanta. While James Gunn was prepping The Suicide Squad, Disney rehired the him on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

While James Gunn has a script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 already, production on the film isn’t expected to begin until he finishes up with The Suicide Squad. Where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will fall on Marvel Studios’ slate is currently unknown, however we now have an idea on of when the the sequel will start filming. James Gunn revealed in the comments of a recent Instagram post that filming for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t start for sometime:

“Won’t start filming for a year or so.”

Marvel Studios currently has two open dates for 2022 and four in 2023. With this update from James Gunn, do you think Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will come in 2022 or 2023? Comment below!

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was originally expected to begin this past January to prime the movie for a May 2020 release window. James Gunn was set to direct from a script he wrote, but the film was ultimately delayed when Disney removed James Gunn from the project last year, before reversing their decision and bringing him back in March. But to complicate matters even further, he signed on to both write and direct The Suicide Squad for DC Films, pushing back the start date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn. The cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies was most recently seen in Avengers: Endgame. It is unclear if Chris Hemsworth will appear as Thor in the film, since his final scene in Avengers: Endgame suggests a possible team-up. The film does not have a release date, but it is speculated to arrive in either 2022 or 2023.
