DC Studios co-head James Gunn has revealed that the second season of Peacemaker is coming after Superman: Legacy hits theaters on July 11, 2025. This announcement has left fans of the HBO Max series disappointed due to the long gap between the two seasons.
Peacemaker stars John Cena, with the wrestler-turned-actor reprising his role as Christopher “Chris” Smith, a DC Comics character that first appeared in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The series follows the adventures of the titular character, a ruthless and deadly government agent, who is tasked with working a team of misfits to take down a dangerous threat.
Don’t expect Peacemaker season 2 before July 2025
The disappointment over the long wait time is palpable. Many Peacemaker fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment, with some even questioning the decision to release a second season after such a long gap.
Peacemaker has quickly become a fan-favorite, thanks in part to John Cena’s portrayal of the DC Comics character. The series has also been praised for its unique blend of action, humor and drama.
Created by writer Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette, Peacemaker was introduced as a member of Task Force X, a team of supervillains who are sent on a dangerous mission by the government. The character is known for his extreme dedication to peace, even if it means resorting to violence to achieve it. His series picks up right after the events of The Suicide Squad.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
