James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy Set Marvel Studios

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has become known as one of the more interactive directors in Hollywood. He frequently interacts with fans on social media, sometimes providing details about his projects. During a Facebook Q&A today, Gunn teased the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

To celebrate the stellar week for Blu-ray and DVD sales of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the United Kingdom, James Gunn jumped to Facebook to voice his support for his international fans with a touching message but it’s what came in the comment section that has everyone buzzing.

A fan decided to ask James Gunn when he thought the third Guardians of the Galaxy film might hit theaters, he responded with a pretty specific answer:

“In a little under three years.”

That would leave the release date to somewhere in the summer of 2020, making it about a year out from the kickoff point of Phase 4 of the MCU with the Spider-Man Homecoming sequel.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kurt Russell. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD as well as all digital platforms.
