One of the biggest pieces of news to drop during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the confirmation that Kurt Russell would play the role of Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, it was also revealed that the character from the comics Russell is playing was Ego, The Living Planet and father to Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord. This seemed like a major spoiler when the information was released as the details had been so tightly kept secret when the movie first went into development. However director James Gunn, went on Facebook to thoroughly explain exactly why this isn’t the major spoiler it appears to be.
Gunn has been known to engage with his fans regularly through social media, generally clarifying or debunking rumours about his latest film. Gunn goes into great detail to explain those bothered why the reveal isn’t a spoiler. Gunn explains that Ego is a major part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and would need to be advertised, also they were very aware that the information would probably get out anyway and from a business persepective they wanted to control the story. Finally he explains that simply this information shouldn’t affect the audience’s experience of the movie
“knowing who Quill’s father is will not diminish your enjoyment of the film in any way. The story is not built to be a shocking twist in the same way Luke’s father was Darth, Soylent Green was people, Rosebud was a sled, or that that pretty woman from Crying Game had a penis (I guess I should have said spoilers before all that). Ego is the emotional center of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from the beginning to the end, and is not a twist.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters April 25, 2017.
