Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn recently responded to a fan who asked him if Batman will make an appearance in his next project, The Suicide Squad.
James Gunn is developing a new Suicide Squad movie for Warner Brothers, with production set to begin later this year for a Summer 2021 release. While plot details are being kept under lock and key, James Gunn recently responded to a fan wondering if Batman will make an appearance in the project, which is titled The Suicide Squad. According to the filmmaker, Batman won’t be in the upcoming movie.
While responding to the fan’s question on his official Instagram page, James Gunn said that fans can expect to see the Caped Crusader in The Batman but not in The Suicide Squad, as his DC Films project will focus on the titular supervillain team. The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is expected to deliver a new take on the supervillain team, with Idris Elba playing a fresh character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman playing Rick Flag again, David Dastmalchian starring as Polka-Dot Man, and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller. John Cena reportedly in talks for an undisclosed role.
Warrior helmer Gavin O’Connor was previously attached to write and direct a version of the Suicide Squad sequel with Jared Leto and Will Smith but this is no longer the case. An earlier draft of the script was once rumored to center on the team’s mission to find a terrifying new Weapon of Mass Destruction that happened to be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. These projects include The Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Birds of Prey, Black Adam, Nightwing, Supergirl and New Gods.
The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Batman’s future on the big screen!
