Superman is set to take flight once again as James Gunn begins work on Superman: Legacy. The renowned writer and director took to social media to share that the DC Studios movie has entered pre-production.
“I’m honored to be part of the legacy,” Gunn tweeted, along with the cover page of the script. “And what better day than Superman Anniversary Day to dive fully into early pre-production on Superman: Legacy? Costumes, production design, and more now up and running.”
The 85th anniversary of the debut of the beloved hero in the pages of DC Comics is commemorated on Superman Anniversary Day, and James Gunn’s announcement has set the stage for another thrilling chapter in the Man of Steel’s long and storied history.
DC Studios is casting a new Kal-El for Superman: Legacy, as the DC Universe movie explores the early years of the Last Son of Krypton, around the time he first starts working at the Daily Planet in Metropolis. As such, Henry Cavill is not returning as the DC Comics hero.
Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. The movie promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark and Superman while working at the Daily Planet and fighting off villains. The choice to focus on the early years of his career is a bold move that could potentially breathe new life into the character and appeal to a younger generation of fans.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
