Amid ongoing speculation about the future of The Batman Part II and its place within the wider DC Universe, James Gunn has set the record straight.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn offered new insight into the current state of The Batman Part II and addressed persistent rumors about its status. While discussing the future of DC’s cinematic universe, Gunn was asked whether he would have considered incorporating Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the new connected DCU if it had been up to him. “It would be a consideration,” Gunn told the outlet. “We’d have to think about it. We’d have to think about it. It is not like we’ve never discussed it.”
The interviewer noted that Gunn’s answer sounded more present-tense than expected, possibly suggesting that such a crossover is still on the table. However, Gunn quickly clarified where things stand regarding Batman’s place in the franchise.
“No, I don’t — Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,” he said. “And it’s not — I’m not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right, because he’s incredibly important to DC, as is Wonder Woman. So outside of the stuff that I’m doing in the projects that are actively going, our two priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman and our Batman scripts.”
As it stands, the DCU’s version of the Dark Knight is still going by the working title The Brave and the Bold, and Gunn confirmed that label still applies: “Right now, yeah. Right now.” When pressed directly on whether there’s still a “non-zero chance” that Reeves’ Batman could eventually be pulled into the DCU, Gunn paused before giving a carefully measured answer.
“[Long pause.] I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it’s not likely. It’s not likely at all.” That cautious response may leave the door slightly open, but it strongly suggests that there are no active plans to merge the two timelines.
The Batman Part II Is Still Moving Forward, But Slowly
Most importantly, Gunn wanted to address a specific and recurring rumor head-on: that The Batman Part II has been quietly scrapped. “I’ll also say Batman Part II is not canceled. That’s the other thing I hear all the time — that Batman Part II is canceled. It’s not canceled.”
He went on to explain the delay in movement on the sequel. “We don’t have a script. Matt’s slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he’s doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man.”
So for fans wondering whether Robert Pattinson’s version of the Caped Crusader still has a future on the big screen — or whether he’ll ever cross paths with the rest of the DCU — the answers are cautiously optimistic. While crossover hopes should be tempered, The Batman Part II is very much still in development.
