In a recent Instagram Q&A James Gunn reveals that he has free reign on The Suicide Squad and they’re almost finished filming.

James Gunn is hard at work on The Suicide Squad but is still taking time to let fans know how the film is going, along with some of the behind-the-scenes happenings. In the recent Instagram Q&A, a fan brought up if James Gunn had trouble when writing The Suicide Squad due to it being apart of the larger DCEU. In a candid answer, he revealed that he was given “free reign” when it came to creating The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn being given complete creative control on The Suicide Squad lines up with the studios new initiative to let directors focus on their vision as opposed to shoe-horning in ties to a cinematic universe. Recent examples of this include Joker, which was a stand-alone picture. While The Suicide Squad will certainly tie into the larger DCEU, we can imagine it’ll be reigned back when compared to films like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In the second question asked by a fan, James Gunn revealed that shooting for The Suicide Squad should almost be done. Judging by his response, perhaps the camera will stop rolling before the new year.
