The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has revealed when his film takes place in the DCEU timeline.

One of the most exciting films in the DCEU pipeline is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which will bring us a brand new take on the titular deadly task force. Details on the Gunn project are surprisingly slim seeing as we aren’t aware of the entire roster of the Suicide Squad at this point. Fans are most curious to see how Gunn’s iteration of the sinister team will differ from David Ayer’s, as well as how the film feeds into the DCEU.

It’s no surprise that the DCEU has reshuffled its slate along with its intentions, so there’s no telling how exactly James Gunn’s film will impact the cinematic universe. While we may not even know who is playing who in The Suicide Squad, the director did reveal when the film takes place in the DCEU timeline. During his Saturday evening Instagram Stories Q&A, Gunn was asked when his film takes place. While his response was brief and cryptic, it does help us understand where the brand new film is anchored: The Suicide Squad “takes place in the year it comes out.”

If all goes according to plan and the coronavirus worries tempers, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will hit cinemas during the summer of 2021. However, when taking a look at the DCEU timeline, this places the film right after Harley Quinn meets her fellow Birds of Prey. Seeing as Harley is returning for Gunn’s film, it’s almost certain that she’ll mention her good friends Huntress and Black Canary. While it’s an obvious answer, the film should take place after everything the DCEU has gone through — Steppenwolf and all.

What are your thoughts on James Gunn’s reveal? Are you excited to see his take on The Suicide Squad?

The first film followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. However, James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on Task Force X in his upcoming movie.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the upcoming film stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
