‘The Suicide Squad’ Director James Gunn Not Interested In Making His Own Joker

He has his sights elsewhere.

James Gunn The Suicide Squad Joker

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has no interest in creating his own version of the Joker.

Before he made his triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to finally film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn was working in the DC Extended Universe on two projects: The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. The Suicide Squad was acclaimed by critics and fans alike, with many seeing the standalone sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 film as a remarkable improvement.

The Suicide Squad found James Gunn bringing characters both recognizable and obscure to life through his horribly beautiful mind. We saw the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn as well as the additions of Idris Elba as Bloodsport and John Cena as Peacemaker among others. One character from the previous film that was noticeably absent was the Joker (Jared Leto). As it turns out, one of the reasons why we don’t see the Clown Prince of Crime is due to James Gunn’s lack of interest.

In an interview with Desde Hollywood, James Gunn revealed why he has no intention in bringing the Joker to life in any of his upcoming DC projects after The Suicide Squad:

“There’s all sorts of other characters I’m interested in doing. Joker isn’t really one of them. He’s been done well so many times by so many people. I am much more interested in taking characters who haven’t fully had their shot, or people who I [connect with]… For whatever reason, I feel connected to Harley Quinn. I feel she’s one of the easiest characters I’ve ever written. So I’m interested in her, and I’m interested in some other DC characters, and we’ll just see what happens next.”

Similar to his approach with Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn is more interested in bringing lesser-known characters to life rather than working with already-established names. Not many people recognized the Guardians, but they have since become household names. Now, The Suicide Squad characters including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man and King Shark are receiving their respect from fans. Besides, we just had a Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix, and perhaps we will be seeing a new take on the character sometime soon.

Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is now available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD.
