While plot details remain under wraps, James Gunn will reportedly bring a whole new take on the supervillain team-up. An earlier draft of the script was rumored to center on the supervillain team’s mission to find a terrifying new Weapon of Mass Destruction that happened to be Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. But this is no longer the case. It remains in question as to whether or not the film could feature Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith, despite Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller, and Joel Kinnaman playing Rick Flag again.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will feature David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, as well as Flula Borg, Steve Agee, Taika Waititi, and Idris Elba. John Cena is also reportedly in talks for an undisclosed role.
James Gunn will reportedly shoot The Suicide Squad before he moves back to Marvel Studios in order to complete the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy with the third installment. While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was originally scheduled to begin early this year, the project was put on hold following Disney’s decision to remove James Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy last summer before reinstating him in March. James Gunn will now begin production on the third Guardians of the Galaxy film after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021.
