James Gunn recently took to Twitter to explain where Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced plans for Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth installment of the solo series starring Chris Hemsworth and the first following the God of Thunder’s life-changing experiences in Avengers: Endgame. Of course, with Thor having last been seen hitching a ride with the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Endgame, fans were curious to know if Love and Thunder would be set before or after James Gunn’s Guardians Vol. 3, especially considering a release date for the latter project was not announced at Comic-Con.
Earlier this week, James Gunn took to Instagram to clarify where Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder take place in the MCU timeline. Responding to a fan question on the website, James Gunn offered a simple answer on the subject, confirming that Thor: Love and Thunder is set before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder features a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman. The film will be based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, with Portman’s Jane Foster set to become the new Thor.
While production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was scheduled to begin this year, the project was put on hold following the decision to remove Gunn as the director of the final chapter in the trilogy. However, Gunn was later reinstated as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Now, he will begin production on the threequel after completing work on The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. and DC.
Details on the third and final chapter of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy are currently unknown, though the film will likely explore the ramifications of the universe-changing events in Avengers: Endgame. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is expected to star Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Sean Gunn.
Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on November 5, 2021.
