James Gunn recently opened up on why John Cena’s Peacemaker got his own HBO Max series.

Originally revealed back in 2020, the John Cena Peacemaker series was originally advertised as a prequel to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. After the film was released, it was revealed that the show was, in fact, a sequel to the film, and the director himself considered the show a sequel. One question that some people have been asking, however, is why give John Cena’s character?

In The Suicide Squad, John Cena’s Peacemaker is perhaps one of the most villainous characters in the film that is full of villains as the main characters. Towards the end of the film, he is revealed to be Amanda Waller’s man on the inside and kills Rick Flag in a brutal fight. Afterward, Idris Elba’s Bloodsport shoots and apparently kills Peacemaker before an after-credits scene revealed that he is in fact alive.

In a previous interview, James Gunn had commented on why the show was focusing on Peacemaker instead of Bloodsport. In a more recent interview with Sups, the director revealed that a big reason why John Cena got his own show was because the two became really good friends with him very fast:

“Number one, I really got along with John Cena. We became really good friends. He’s a funny guy and I thought it would be fun to continue working with him.”

Here’s a synopsis for Peacemaker:

PEACEMAKER explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it!

Peacemaker was created by James Gunn, who wrote all the episodes and directed five of them. The first season will consist of eight episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez also directing episodes. Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner will compose the score.

Peacemaker stars John Cena, Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, and Chukwudi Iwuji.

Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on January 13, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the upcoming John Cena series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
