James Marsden expressed his openness to the idea of playing a different X-Men character in the MCU.
The X-Men film series launched in 2000 with a film featuring a cast of fan-favorites that included James Marsden’s Cyclops. After X-Men proved to be a financial success, multiple sequels followed and James Marsden reprised his role as Cyclops in three of them, with his most recent appearance being a cameo in Days of Future Past.
Of course, the X-Men film series will be rebooted under Marvel Studios, which gained the rights to the characters after its parent company Disney acquired 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. While Marvel Studios’ is expected to recast keys role when it moves forward with its own X-Men films, James Marsden expressed a willingness to portray a new character in the MCU’s version of the team during an interview with ComicBook.com:
“Sure. It might be weird to be one thing to sort of rejoin Marvel or rejoin DC or something like that, but to actually rejoin X-Men as a different character might feel a little strange. But I would be open to it. I mean, that was a world I have great respect for and [I’m] very grateful to be a part of that family for a long period of time. It’s one of those special moments in my career and I would totally be open to that.”

Kevin Feige confirmed plans to include mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Marvel Studios’ 2019 San Diego Comic-Con presentation. However, the studio is reportedly in no rush to introduce the X-Men to the MCU, meaning it will likely be some time before we learn who will replace James Marsden as Cyclops.
Here is the official synopsis for the most recent X-Men film Dark Phoenix:
This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix is now available on Digital HD, 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
