Director James Wan recently revealed Planet of the Vampires served as a major influence on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
James Wan is back in the director’s chair for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is now filming. Prior to the first Aquaman film, Wan was best known for his horror films until he flexed his eye for action and adventure. While speaking with Total Film, Wan shared that he will be going back to his horror roots for the upcoming sequel:
“Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires. You can take the boy out of horror but you can never take the horror out the boy.”
Planet of the Vampires is a classic Italian sci-fi horror film that has inspired others like it, such as Alien and Prometheus. Beyond what influenced Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, James Wan also talked some more about what audiences can expect from the upcoming DC film:
Well, the first movie took a lot of people by surprise, right? And that’s partially because they were not familiar with the comic book, which deals in this very lurid, strange world. People were taken aback that I didn’t throw all that stuff away and make a dark, heavy film. But I didn’t feel that would have been right for it. So with the second film, I feel it will be easier for people to accept where we go because I’ve already laid the foundation.”
Here is the synopsis for the first film:
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be… a king.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm / Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.
Aquaman is available on Digital HD, 4K UHD Combo Pack, Blu-ray, and DVD. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
