James Wan Discusses ‘Aquaman’ Tone; Promises A Fun Movie

One of the many complains about Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice so far has been that the movie is really dark and not that fun compared to other superhero movies. In a recent interview with IGN, director James Wan was asked whether or not his Aquaman movie is going to have a similar tone, but his answer might surprise you. Here’s what the director told the site:

“The kind of filmmaker that I am…even my darker horror films generally are still very fun and I think that’s important for me and the kind of films I make. Aquaman is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years and I just think it’s fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character, but at the same time, let’s not forget to have fun with it.”

In fairness, you can’t really expect every superhero movie to have a light tone, so complaining about Batman v Superman being dark isn’t really reasonable. Regardless, expect to see a lot more of Jason Momoa as Aquaman in Justice League next November, plus his very own standalone movie, which hits theaters on July 27, 2018.

diversity is needed in the dceu moving forward

    • LupeX

I don’t hear people making that claim about the Marvel comedies.

      • Carl

That’s because they haven’t made a single comedy movie.

        • Fenix

They’re not comedies, they just have some levity to them.

      • UnBoxingJon

That’s because they’re good movies that make money and have been well received by critics and fans of comic books.

  • LupeX

I think DCEU should stick to their guns and keep their tone as it is.
Aquaman is going to be a badass not a comedic hero.

    • Carl

Fun and comedic aren’t the same thing.

      • John Smith

        And the DCEU is neither.

        • Carl

And DC comics can be both.

          • John Smith

Maybe, but this isn’t a discussion about the comics.

          • Carl

No but it’s a discussion about an adaptation of comic book characters.

          • John Smith

            And?
            Different tone.
            Different writers.
            Different medium.
            Different audience.

        • Axxell

Well thanks for saving me $15; if the movie isn’t gonna be fun, there’s no point for me to see it.

  • Fenix

The problem is so far both of the DCEU movies have ended on really somber downbeat notes. Fun and comedic are indeed two different things. Case in point, Daredevil is serious and dark but it’s still fun and exciting; it doesn’t feel like a slog.

      Suicide Squad looks fun.

      • John Smith

And Batman vs Superman looked exciting.
