Suicide Squad director David Ayer has positively responded to Jared Leto’s comments advocating for the release of the Ayer Cut.
Since Zack Snyder got his director’s cut of Justice League released, David Ayer has been hoping his Suicide Squad will get the same treatment. Ayer’s take on Task Force X was critically panned at the time of its release, only for it to be revealed that the director didn’t receive final cut privileges and that a huge chunk of footage wouldn’t be in the film. Jared Leto, who played The Joker, was especially critical of Warner Bros. at the time of the release as he maintained that his take on the Clown Prince of Crime was undermined and was never given the opportunity to shine.
During an interview at the premiere of House of Gucci, Jared Leto was asked his thoughts on the Ayer Cut movement, which has picked up momentum in the last few months. Leto hesitated at first when asked by Variety but came out and said “Absolutely. Why not? Why wouldn’t they? That’s what streaming’s for, right?”
Suicide Squad director David Ayer quoted the initial tweet that featured a video of Jared Leto’s answer and shared positive sentiments. Ayer then tagged AT&T, the parent company of Warner Brothers.
If it comes down to churning out content to boost subscribers then both David Ayer and Jared Leto are right. It’s uncertain if the so-called “Ayer Cut” will ever see the light of day like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but precedence has clearly been set. Despite naysayers, Ayer and (now) Leto have remained persistent that the original cut of Suicide Squad is far superior to what was released.
Here is the synopsis for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad:
It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
Written and directed by David Ayer, the film stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, and Scott Eastwood.
Both Suicide Squad films are available on BluRay, 4K, DVD, and Digital. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of Jared Leto as Joker, David Ayer, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
