Sonic the Hedgehog star Jim Carrey opened up about what it would take for him to do a sequel to The Mask.
When Sonic the Hedgehog makes his big-screen debut next month, he will face off against the classic video game villain known as Dr. Robotnik. Tasked with bringing the antagonist to life is Jim Carrey, the renowned actor known for roles in films such as Ace Ventura and The Mask.
During an interview with ComicBook.com, Jim Carrey was asked if he would ever do a sequel to The Mask, one of the comedic properties hasn’t revisited to date. While Jim Carrey didn’t close the door on the possibility of doing a sequel to The Mask, he did note that he would only be interested in a visionary filmmaker was involved:
“I don’t think in terms of sequels and stuff like that, I mean, this one [Sonic The Hedgehog] is kind of right for it because we have not evolved the character [Dr. Eggman] fully yet. The Mask I think, myself, you know, it would depend on a filmmaker. It depends on a filmmaker really. I don’t want to do it just to do it. But I would only do it if it was some crazy visionary filmmaker. Sure.”
Loosely based on the Dark Horse Comics series of the same name, The Mask starred Jim Carrey as a hopelessly romantic banker named Stanley Ipkiss who discovers a magical mask that transforms him into a green-faced, zoot suit-wearing, mischievous gangster. A critically lambasted sequel titled Son of The Mask was released eleven years later but did not involve Jim Carrey.
