Are both Riddlers connected?

A Twitter user has spotted a hilarious connection between The Batman and Jim Carrey’s take on the Riddler.

The Batman is finally out and it’s taken the world by storm. The brooding DC reboot has wrangled over $250 million worldwide at the box office and shows no signs of stopping in the coming weeks. Forums and social media sites have become flooded with memes about Robert Pattinson’s emo taken on Bruce Wayne or Paul Dano’s unhinged performance as The Riddler that veers into YouTuber parody. With more fans discovering the film day by day, a potential reference (but probably coincidence) has been unearthed that ties the film to Jim Carrey’s Riddler!

Jim Carrey made his debut as the Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever, which will forever be relegated as one of the most fun, Saturday-morning-cartoon takes on The Caped Crusader. Filled with camp and maniacal glee, Carrey’s performance as the trickster is still one of the best comic book villain takes, even if it doesn’t match up with Paul Dano’s almost stoic and terrifying performance. But it looks like both Dano and Carrey’s Riddler performances might be connected… kind of.

A viral Twitter post has pointed out that Jim Carrey’s glasses for Edward Nygma (pre-Riddler) are similar to the ones that Paul Dano’s Riddler rocks in The Batman. Both glasses do look strikingly similar and while Carrey’s glasses were a testament to the style at the time, Dano’s are clearly a throwback look which begs the question… was this a deliberate reference? Or is this just a coincidence? Guess that’s another riddle audiences will have to solve!

Here is the synopsis for The Batman:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Barry Keoghan as The Joker.
