J. J. Abrams discussed the possibility of returning to the Star Wars franchise after working on The Rise of Skywalker.
After directing Disney’s first entry the Star Wars sequel trilogy, J. J. Abrams passed the baton to Rian Johnson for the sequel with no intention of returning for the third film. However, the unexpected exit of Colin Trevorrow resulted in J. J. Abrams returning for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final chapter of the nine-part saga that began with the original film over forty years ago.
Of course, Disney and Lucasfilm will continue to produce Star Wars projects with new stories and characters that not connected to the Skywalker family. During an interview with Esquire, J. J. Abrams was asked if he would be willing to return to tell one of these new Star Wars stories and while the filmmaker didn’t close the door on the possibility, he indicated that he’s not currently up for working on another entry in the franchise considering he just completed The Rise of Skywalker:
“I just yesterday finished this thing. So it’s a bit like asking someone at the end of a meal at French Laundry, you know, if they want to get a burger. It’s like, you know, I’m sure that one day having a burger would be the greatest idea in the history of time, but in this moment I’m full.”
Would you like to see J. J. Abrams return for another Star Wars project or does he deserve a long break after working on The Rise of Skywalker?
