Batgirl star JK Simmons recently teased which DC Universe the upcoming HBO Max film will take place in.
The DC Universe on the big screen is starting to get confusing with projects like Joker and The Batman taking place outside of the original cinematic universe kickstarted by Zack Snyder. The long-awaited Flash film will also take it one step further with the multiverse and the re-introduction of Michael Keaton’s Batman. Batgirl is a film that could easily take place in Matt Reeves’ universe, but it seems the project will occur in the DC Extended Universe with the return of JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon.
However, rumors suggest we will also see Michael Keaton’s Batman in Batgirl instead of Ben Affleck. A lot of changes appear to be coming and in an interview with Looper, JK Simmons teased Batgirl will take place in a new DC universe:
“I was as surprised as I was when [Marvel] came back to ask me to do [Jameson] that they were coming to me to play Batgirl’s father, Commissioner Gordon again, in this new version of the universe. We’ve already had lots of discussions about the script and how to play everything. I’m excited by the cast and the directors and … looking forward to diving back into the DC multiverse.”
JK Simmons could be alluding to the fact that the plans for his Commissioner Gordon have changed since he first appeared in Justice League. There’s also the possibility the actor could be hinting at a brand-new DC universe that will be created as a result of The Flash film starring Ezra Miller that will directly impact Batgirl‘s Gotham City. All that we know for certain is Warner Bros. will be exploring the DC Multiverse on the big screen in the future.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to direct Batgirl, which is being planned as a movie for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The two most recently directed the 2020 box office hit Bad Boys for Life and episodes of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Christina Hodson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the script.
DC’s Batgirl movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. Barbara was last seen in a live-action feature film in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, with Alicia Silverstone playing the iconic DC Comics character. JK Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, with Brendan Fraser appearing as the villain Firefly.
