Joaquin Phoenix has revealed where he found the inspiration for his Joker laugh, and it came from an unexpected place.
During a recent interview, with Italy’s Il Venerdì di Repubblica’, Joaquin Phoenix discussed his upcoming role as The Joker. One of the things he touched on was where he got the laughter. According to Joaquin Phoenix, he watched videos of people who suffered from a condition known as pathological laughter. This is apparently a neurological disorder that causes people to laugh uncontrollably and this is where he got the idea for The Joker’s laugh:
“I started from here. I saw videos showing people suffering from pathological laughter, a psychic dysfunction that makes mimicry uncontrollable.”
Even months from its release, Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal as The Joker has already garnered a significant amount of praise. An early reaction to his performance has reportedly called it Oscar-worthy and that the film as a whole is an achievement on the highest level.
