The Venice Film Festival has officially announced Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will be part of its 2019 lineup.
The official lineup for the 76th Venice Film Festival was unveiled this morning in Rome and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will have its world premiere at the prestigious event. Furthermore, Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is included among the in-competition titles.
News of Joker being selected for the Venice Film Festival comes just days after the Joaquin Phoenix film was announced as part of the TIFF lineup this year. With both festivals commonly being an indicator of which films will become major award season contenders, fans are speculating Warner Bros. is preparing to push Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker for major accolades this fall.

Here is the official synopsis for Joker:
“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
