Joker breaks the October record that was previously held by Venom, as the Joaquin Phoenix film racks in $13.3 million with Thursday night previews.

Joker may be the center of controversy, but the box office results are sure to put a smile on the face of Warner Bros. and the team behind the film. The clown prince of crime brought in $13.3 million on Thursday night, breaking the record for October that was previously held by Venom. Projections for the Joaquin Phoenix film have it set to make anywhere from $75-95 million for a record breaking opening weekend.

Venom broke October records last year, opening to $10 million with Thursday night previews. The film currently holds the October opening weekend record with $80.2 million and Joker has a decent chance of passing it. While Venom had some serious  competition with Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, Joker is in the clear as the Joaquin Phoenix film is the only big title launching this weekend.

Do you think Joker can crack a $100M opening weekend? What did you think of the Joaquin Phoenix film? Do you think it’s better than Venom? Sound off in the comments section below!

Here is the official synopsis for the Joaquin Phoenix film:

Director Todd Phillips’ Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. The movie is not part of the DC Extended Universe, and seems to play into Warner Bros.’s interests of making creator-driven superhero movies over necessarily building a hyper-connected shared universe… At least for the time being.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news on Joaquin Phoenix,  Joker and Venom!
