Marvel Comics executive and former editor-in-chief Joe Quesada has announced he is leaving the company.
Joe Quesada has been executive vice president and creative director of Marvel Entertainment since 2019 and has worked with the comics publisher for over 30 years. Quesada first worked for Marvel as a free-lance artist on comedy comic book, What The-?! in 1991. In 1998, he was made editor-in-chief of the then-new Marvel Knights comic line. In 2000, he became editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics.
The End Of An Era
Posting on Twitter today, Joe Quesada shared an announcement that he would be leaving Marvel Comics. While he said he would still be “contributing from time to time, including something I’m thrilled about for later this year,” Quesada will no longer hold an executive position at Marvel for the first time in over 20 years. He officially leaves on June 1.
In the post, Joe Quesada reflected on his journey with Marvel, noting that in his early days as editor-in-chief “it looked like I was selling tickets on the Titanic” – a nod to the fact Marvel had hit financial difficulty when Quesada was made editor-in-chief. Joe Quesada’s tenure saw the introduction of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, a radical reboot of Marvel continuity that proved controversial but helped attract new readers. His impact on Marvel has been vast and, while he may still be involved in future Marvel projects on occasion, he leaves some big shoes to fill.
