Joel Kinnaman is preparing to return to the role of Rick Flag in The Suicide Squad, and he’s revealed an image showing how he’ll get into character for the sequel directed by James Gunn.
Joel Kinnaman has just released an image of himself taking an ice bath in a post tagged with The Suicide Squad and Rick Flag, his character in that movie. Filming on the project is expected to happen very soon as Birds of Prey (which includes Suicide Squad character Harley Quinn) is set to wrap, and James Gunn keeps teasing that more news on Joel Kinnaman’s movie will be coming in the very near future.

Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag is the de facto leader of Task Force X, also known as the Suicide Squad, but his role is usually overshadowed by the various villains that are begrudgingly putting their lives on the line in order to get reduced prison sentences. Aside from the aforementioned Margot Robbie, the only other returning cast members are Jai Courtney and Viola Davis, meaning that Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg will have to test his mettle against an entirely new squad of villains.
The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the supervillain team in his upcoming movie, with Idris Elba playing a new character, Jai Courtney reprising his role as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman playing Rick Flag again, David Dastmalchian starring as Polka-Dot Man, and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller. John Cena, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi and Peter Capaldi are reportedly in talks for undisclosed roles, with Steve Agee voicing King Shark.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. These projects include The Batman, The Flash, Birds of Prey, Black Adam, Supergirl and New Gods.
The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Joel Kinnaman, James Gunn and The Suicide Squad as we learn it!
