Chernobyl director Johan Renck had been tapped to direct the The Last Of Us pilot for HBO.

Johan Renck and writer Craig Mazin launched to prominence last year when they delivered HBO’s Chernobyl, a sobering look at the nuclear disaster from 1986. Renck, who directed the entire miniseries, even won himself a Best Directing award at the Primetime Emmys. Now, in a brand new interview with Discussing Film, the Chernobyl helmer has revealed that he’ll be directing the pilot for The Last of Us for HBO.

Johan Renck revealed the news when asked if he’d be interested in collaborating with Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin again. The director then dropped the news that he’d be executive producing the series and would also be directing its pilot:

“I’m an executive producer on it and attached to it. It’s an ongoing TV series. So that’s not something that I will be able to take on to that extent, but I’m part of that series and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we’ll see how it goes on further.”

Mazin is set to write and executive produce The Last of Us alongside Neil Druckman, the man behind the hit video game, which is getting a sequel that will be released later this month. Chernobyl and The Last of Us have quite a bit in common considering they both deal with the fallout of a disaster that drastically changes the world. The PlayStation exclusive has been praised for its unique, intimate and realistic take on the zombie and disaster genre, with many considering it to be a benchmark for video- game storytelling. With Johan Renck on board to direct the first episode of the series, we’re certain that it’ll be the hit and critical behemoth that both HBO and fans are hoping for.

The first The Last of Us video game centers on the relationship between a smuggler named Joel and 14-year-old Ellie, the latter of whom may be the key to curing the deadly pandemic that resulted in the post-apocalypse world of the game. Hired to smuggle Ellie out of a quarantine zone, Joel finds himself relying on the teenage girl just as much as she relies on him as they fight to survive on their journey across the United States.

The HBO is currently developing a television adaptation that will cover the events of the first game, with the upcoming sequel titled potentially serving as the basis for additional content. Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann will pen and executive the series. The HBO adaptation will be a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and in association with PlayStation Productions. Carolyn Strauss and Naughty Dog president Evan Wells also serve as executive producers.
