John Boyega Calls ‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ A ‘Larger Than Life’ Film

Pacific Rim Guillermo del Toro

John Boyega has some exciting new projects on the way. This weekend, the Kathryn Bigelow-directed film Detroit hits theaters and of course, he will return as Finn in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi when that arrives in our galaxy this Christmas. But right after that, we will also be seeing him in another sci-fi film: Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Fans were ecstatic when Guillermo Del Toro announced that a sequel to his entertaining first film was officially in development despite the tepid U.S. box office returns. Fans became even more excited after it was announced that Boyega would be the star of this new sequel to be directed by Daredevil season one showrunner Steven S. DeKnight.

John Boyega has plenty of excitement for this upcoming blockbuster. Not only does he lead the film’s impressive cast, but he will also serve as a co-producer on the film along with his agent Femi Oguns with their company UpperRoom productions.

While promoting Detroit, John Boyega spoke with IGN about the monster movie. He gave some quick details regarding his character and also praised DeKnight’s approach to the film as well as the epic scale:

“I am playing Jacob Pentecost, who is kind of like the prodigal son of Stacker Pentecost. Now he’s faced with rejoining the PPDC [Pan Pacific Defense Corps] and trying to help the fight against the Kaiju again. But it’s gonna be in a different way this time. And it’s still heavily influenced by Guillermo del Toro, but at the same time, Steven DeKnight’s directing. And it’s gonna be really fun. It’s larger than life. We’ve got better upgrades. The robots are moving much more swift. Yeah, we’re like ballerinas up in there, it’s fantastic.”

As one of Hollywood’s rising stars, John Boyega’s ambitions beyond Star Wars are quite bright. Hopefully, Pacific Rim: Uprising can also catapult him to become a modern sci-fi icon along with his job as a former Stormtrooper who defected.

Directed by Steven S. DeKnight the film stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Karan Brar, and Adria Arjona.

Pacific Rim: Uprising storms into theaters on March 23, 2018.
